Paramount Ragtime

Description TEL

‘Paramount Ragtime’ is a cylindrical wall sculpture from the ‘Continuum’ series that explores the notion of space-time. Created from raw materials such as steel and reflective glass, the work revolves around a central luminous tube. This tube, reflected infinitely by precisely arranged mirrors on either side, creates a tunnel effect that seems to defy the physical limits of space.

The physical presence of the viewer in the artwork’s environment plays a central role. By moving around it, the viewer becomes an actor in a game of reflections that converge toward a vanishing point, seemingly following it with their gaze. Their capacity for perception allows them to contemplate this immaterial depth, and their movement through space constantly alters their vision of this depth. Each angle of observation reveals a new perspective, making the experience unique to each individual.

A captivating aspect of this sculpture lies in the subtle variation of light intensity. Like a slow and steady breath, almost invisible to the naked eye due to the natural adaptation of human perception, the light follows a cyclical rhythm. This sinusoidal movement, repeating infinitely, evokes an elusive temporality. It immerses the viewer in a hypnotic loop, reinforcing the sensation of infinity and immersion.

Through his work with light and space, Fabien Ficher manipulates reality and questions our perceptual habits. While the rhythmic variation of light symbolizes the eternity of time, the light source, seeming to stretch infinitely, evokes the fluidity of space. The work becomes a tangible reflection on the notions of space and time, where art transcends matter to question our perception of reality. ‘Paramount Ragtime’ thus transcends the simple status of sculpture: it embodies a hypnotic meditation, inviting deep introspection on our relationship to space-time.
